Spread Love on Random Acts of Kindness Day in Austin!

Hey Reader,

Winter in Austin is a time of cozy nights and crisp mornings, a season that invites us to slow down and savor the warmth of the community. Though snow may be rare, the city's charm shines in the winter months with its blend of outdoor activities, local culture, and inviting spots to unwind.

This February, we also celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Day (February 17), a heartwarming reminder to share compassion and make someone's day brighter. Whether it's a small gesture or a grand act, your kindness has the power to inspire and connect.

Tip of the Month: How to Show Kindness This Random Acts of Kindness Day

Here are some meaningful ways to spread joy and goodwill:

  • Write a heartfelt note to a neighbor, coworker, or loved one.
  • Treat someone to coffee—a simple yet thoughtful way to brighten their day.
  • Volunteer your time at a local shelter, food bank, or community organization.
  • Help our furry friends by donating supplies, volunteering, or adopting a pet through the Austin Humane Society.
  • Pay it forward in the drive-thru line or at a local café.

Even the smallest acts can have a big impact on those around you. Stay warm this winter, and remember: a little kindness can make a big difference in our community. Together, let's make Austin shine even brighter!

Texas-style chili is a beloved winter staple, packed with bold flavors and hearty ingredients to warm you up on chilly days.

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs. ground beef (90% lean)
  • 1 Tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 jalapeño pepper, ribs and seeds removed, chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 Tbsp. chili powder
  • 1 Tbsp. paprika
  • 1 Tbsp. ground cumin
  • 1 tsp. dried oregano
  • ½ tsp. freshly ground black pepper
  • ½ tsp. Kosher salt
  • 1 can (8 oz.) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (10 oz.) diced tomatoes & green chilies, undrained
  • 1 cup beer
  • ½ cup (2 oz.) shredded reduced-fat sharp cheddar cheese

Optional Toppings:

  • Sour cream
  • Sliced green onions
  • Shredded cheddar cheese

  2. Add ground beef. Cook for 8-10 minutes, breaking it into small crumbles and stirring occasionally. Drain any excess drippings as needed.
  3. Stir in chili powder, paprika, cumin, oregano, black pepper, and salt. Cook for 1 minute to bloom the spices.
  4. Add tomato sauce, diced tomatoes with green chilies, and beer. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
